Understanding & Managing Organizational Behavior

Today it is inevitable for any organization to achieve it's goals without treating it's employee's interaction as a vital factor to it's success. The understanding and management of Organizational Behavior (OB) compliments this effort. Understanding and managing Organizational Behavior achieves so many objectives for a business that it becomes more flexible to external changes with all the employees working as one cohesive unit.
According to Simms (1994) it is important to revitalize organizational theory and develop a better conceptualization of organizational life. An organizational theorist should carefully consider levels assumptions being made in theory, and is concerned to help managers and administrators.
Like all modernist social sciences, organizational studies seek to control, predict, and explain. There is some controversy over the ethics of controlling workers' behavior, as well as the manner in which workers are treated (see Taylor's scientific management approach compared to the human relations movement of the 1940s). As such, organizational behaviour or OB (and its cousin, Industrial psychology) have at times been accused of being the scientific tool of the powerful. Those accusations notwithstanding, OB can play a major role in organizational development, enhancing organizational performance, as well as individual and group performance/satisfaction/commitment.

Looking forward to hear comments from all of you!

OB is all about individual, group, and structure behavior with in an organization. If employee and employer give their 100% to each other then OB of any company is so smooth and fruitful for the company.

    1. Dear Pankaj,

You take the laurels for being the first one to comment! It is off course quite natural that Organizational Behaviour as an integral part of management studies and takes into account the synergies between those who make decisions and the ones who implement them. This certainly facilitates achievement of objectives quite smoothly.

      Do keep posting your thoughts!!

    2. Respected Sir,
OB is really a very good and interesting topic to talk about.

If we go by the definition : OB is understanding the behavior of the people or the groups in an organization in order to understand their reactions and tendencies to behave in certain situations and out look towards that in order to mold them in accordance to the behavior of the organization which will in turn enhance the productivity and efficiency of the organization.

every organization has it's own culture, value and ethics which they follow and they need to make their members of the organization to do the same that too not forcefully but by persuasion and this can not be done without having the understanding of the behavior of people of the organization as these are these people only who can either drive an organization towards either success or failure.

sir here I would like to quote the example which you only gave that "no master would like to have a cook who does not follow his rules,is impolite, lazy and has no eagerness no matter how good food he can cook but rather he will prefer a cook who has an enthusiasm to learn,is polite and obedient, because the way to cook food deliciously can be learned but having good behavior is bit difficult".

An organization is made by their people and OB is a tool by which we can understand and then gradually can mold people in order to get maximum best out of them enhancing the productivity and efficiency of both Organization as well as that individual hence leading to mutual benefit.

      Thanking you

Here i want to add some point related to it, As you know OB is study of what people think, feel, OB is like research study individuals group and organizational level characteristic that influence behavior is work setting.

In any organisation one can assume that business is to succeed what exactly does being a winning organization means and what does it get there.

What i feel OB is an essential tools for managing effective team. if you can zone in an employees personality, creativity and adaptability motivating that employee the way. They need to be motivated is a guaranteed success for employee and for the company.

OB of a company highly depend upon the manager their who take work from subordinate , with the knowledge manager can achieve a successful career. since a manager need to get his job done by the other to have an organizational skill become valuable talent.

SIR,As we know the environment of business is always changing, the role of the manager have become more sensitive. In order to know how to handle work force and deal with the complication of the new environment. The supervisor need to develop their information about attitude and the behavior of indiviusal and group in organization.

Organizational behavior studies have become more important today than
in previous years because corporations must learn to adapt to the
rapidly changing business cultures that have stemmed from a
    competitive and fast-paced market.

Organizational behavior was a topic that was not discussed until an
employee's behavior changed, productivity changed, or sales decreased.
In today's business world, managers are paying more attention to how
employees react to situations rather than if they respond. They are
beginning to view organizational behavior as an intricate piece of
training and development of the workforce. Soft skills were never a
part of management training and it was rare that managers were
    commended for having those skills.

In the business world today, I feel organizational behavior is an
essential tool for managing effective teams. If you can zone in on an
employees' personality, creativity, and adaptability, motivating that
employee the way they need to be motivated is never a gray area and a
    guaranteed success.

With this knowledge managers can achieve a successful career. Since a
manager needs to get his job done by the others, to have an
organizational behavior skills become a valuable talent.

As the environment of business is always changing, the role of the
managers has become more sensitive. In order to know how to handle a
new workforce, and deal with the complication of the new environment,
the supervisors need to develop their information about attitude and
behavior of individuals, and groups in organization. Now we know not
only the hard skills is important for get the job done, soft skills
are helps managers to do their job more effectively and efficiently.

Organizational behavior means understanding the human behavior. OB is the study of what people do in an organization and how their behavior affect the organization. It also involve team spirit and motivation so that the organisation achieve its objective.

The purpose of an organizational behavior is to gain a great understanding of those factor that influence individual and group dynamics in an organisational setting so that individuals and the group and organization to which the belong may become more efficient and effective.

There are two types of organizations, formal and informal. Informal organizations do not have a specified structure. And Formal organizations are build based upon the objective set for it.

OB involves organizational culture, organizational structure, cultural diversity, inter organizational co-operation and conflict, change, technology and external environmental forces.

OB examines how and why people act, think, and feel in corporate. It is concerned as a nature of leadership, how to motivate people, how to resolve interpersonal conflict and how to develop effective team.

It strives to identify ways in which people can act more effectively, so that it helps the organization to achieve its goal.

  4. Dear Sir,

We all know that, man is a social animal. Also, individuals don’t work in isolation. They all come in contact with other individuals, groups and organization in a variety of ways. The point of contact mainly includes the managers, peers, subordinates, the formal policies and procedures of the organizations, etc.

An individual never joins any organization alone, he is succeeded by his social, economic, educational and cultural background as well. During his work tenure, an individual adapts the culture and ethics, rules and regulations of the organization, he is influenced by other individuals as well. He in turn affects the organization and other individuals with his past experiences and background.

Thus, organizational behaviour can be defined as a field of study that investigates the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behaviour within organizations for the purpose of applying such knowledge efficiently towards improving an organization’s effectiveness.

In today’s business world, it is very important for the mangers to understand the organizational behaviour concepts, then only he can better understand and appreciate the behaviour of the employees within the organization. Study of OB will also help them to the complexity level of the organization, identify the problems of the organization and come up with the best way to overcome the problem.

Managers get their jobs done by their subordinates, so it is very important for them to understand the organization at atomic level i.e. individual level as well. This will help him in motivating the employees, improving their performance and thus, attaining the objective of the organization.

    1. Respected sir,

By definition we can say - Organizational Behavior is a comprehensive field related to study of individual and group dynamics in an organizational setting as well as the organizational themselves. It also involves the studies of behavioral sciences like psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics social psychology and political sciences. Now modern technology is playing a vital role in this.

Organizational behavior is not only the human behavior but also their attitude and promotes skills so that they can act more effectively.

By understanding of organizational behavior concepts managers can better understand and appreciate the behavior of these ascend them.
Example- Most managers in an organization are directly responsible for the work related behavior of a set of other people their immediate subordinate.

Managerial activities in this area includes
      - motivating employees to work harder,
      - ensuring that their jobs are properly designed,
      - resolving conflicts,
      - evaluating their performance and
      - helping them set goals to achieve rewards.

According to my opinion managers can also use their knowledge to understand personal needs and motives how to improve decision making capability, how to respond to do and control stress, how to better communicate with others.

Overall we can say that manager can be conceptualized in much different way. Organizational behavior also provides a set of tool that allows people to understand analyze and describe behavior in an organization or manager to improve enhance or change work behavior so that individuals ,groups and the whole organization can achieve their goals.

  6. Dear Sir,
Organizational Behaviour very important issues for any organization. Because all organizations ,be these business, educational or government, are social system and human behaviour is caused and is highly unpredictable also.

OB means study and application of knowledge about how people as individual and as groups behave or act in organizations. It is concerned with the study of human behaviour at work. Every organizations follow different pattern of Organizational Behaviour for understanding human behaviour which helps managers for managing people effectively.

Organizational Behaviour mainly emphasis on three determinants of behaviour in organizations :Individual, Groups, Structure . An individual joins organizations along with his or her social background, likes and dislikes , pride and prejudices. It is clear that individual’s family cannot be separated from organizational life. So OB studies an individual as a whole person.

As per me, Organizational Behaviour is one of the most important fields that has a huge impact on the success or failure and social standing of an organisation, as it deals with the basic human behaviour at various levels i.e. the individual level, group level, and organizational level. The interactions and changes in behaviour at the different levels, the factors affecting them, and how they are paid heed to and handled by the employees and the organization decides the organization's success, status and repute.

  10. DEAR SIR
Organizations are involved in every facet of our lives. Everyone whether they like it or not are members of multiple organizations. Personally to argue that the study of organizational behavior or to propose any negative response to a structure that is closely involved with our lives is moot. The reality is that organizations organize our lives. Our schedules are almost entirely set by organizations.
What happens in the economy and in the courts and in technology (all elements of the environment of organizations) affects all of our lives profoundly. The reason most organizations do things the way they do is largely a function of what they can make money doing, what is legal, and what technology permits.
Organizations have a tremendous impact on our professional lives and organizational structure. Prestige in industrialized nations is determined by occupation, and by rank within the organization we work for. So bankers (an occupation) have a certain status

OB provides a useful set of tools at many levels of analysis – It helps managersto understand the behavior of individuals within an organization; understand the interpersonal relationships, when two people (coworkers or a superior – subordinate pair) interact; to understand the dynamics or relationships within small groups, both formal teams and informal groups; to understand theintergroup relationships; and finally understand the organizations as whole systems that have interorganisational relationships (Eg – Mergers and Joint ventures).

  15. Dear sir The study of Organizational Behaviour (OB) is very interesting and challenging too. It is
related to individuals, group of people working together in teams. The study becomes more
challenging when situational factors interact. The study of organizational behaviour relates
to the expected behaviour of an individual in the organization. No two individuals
are likely to behave in the same manner in a particular work situation. It is the predictability
of a manager about the expected behaviour of an individual. There are no absolutes
in human behaviour. It is the human factor that is contributory to the productivity hence
the study of human behaviour is important. Great importance therefore must be attached
to the study. Researchers, management practitioners, psychologists, and social scientists
must understand the very credentials of an individual, his background, social framework,
educational update, impact of social groups and other situational factors on behaviour.
Managers under whom an individual is working should be able to explain, predict, evaluate
and modify human behaviour that will largely depend upon knowledge, skill and
experience of the manager in handling large group of people in diverse situations. Preemptive
actions need to be taken for human behaviour forecasting. The value system,
emotional intelligence, organizational culture, job design and the work environment are
important causal agents in determining human behaviour.

  16. Dear Sir Organizational behavior (OB) is a term
related to the study of individual and
    group dynamics in an organizational
setting, as well as the nature of the
    organizations themselves. Whenever
    people interact in organizations, many
factors come into play. The subject of
    Organizational Studies attempts to
    understand and model these factors.
    This subject is becoming more
    important as people with diverse
backgrounds and cultural values have to
    work together effectively and
efficiently. OB seeks to emphasize the
    understanding of behavior in
    organizations so as to develop
    competencies in foreseeing how people
are likely to behave. This knowledge may
then help in controlling those behaviors
that are not befitting the objectives of
    the organizations. Factors like
    objectivity, replicability and sustainability
    are important while selecting the
    methods for this purpose.
    Questionnaire, interview, simulation and
survey are generally used to elicit
    responses of individuals located in
different types of organizations. To a
    large extent their personalities affect
    the nature of their responses

EVERY PEOPLE IN THE ORGANISATION GET A FEELING OF PERSONAL TOUCH IT WILL HAVE A GREATER IMPACT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE COMPANY. HAPPY PERSON WILL GIVE RESULT BEST RATHER THAN WORKING PEOPLE OR ANY PEOPLE WHO IS WORKING LIKE A BORED LIFE I HAVE TO WORK AND NOT AFFECTED OR CAME INTO CONTACT WITH PERSONAL TOUCH. PERSONAL TOUCH MEANS CARING MAKING PERSON HAPPY, THERE IS A BIRTHDAY OF ANY EMPLOYEE AND IF YOU CAN CELEBRATE HIS BIRTHDAY WITH ALL THE FAMILY MEMBERS OF THAT EMPLOYEE THEN ITS A PERSONAL TOUCH GOT ADDED WITH HIM

As we know that OB also deals with the behaviour of individual and group in an organisation. The views of every individual must be respected in an organisation as they are the people who are also performing and putting all their efforts in the functioning of business. This will show that the organisation is giving respect to its employees.
This will motivate the employee in a positive way which will make them delight and enthusiastic which will result in effective performance of the employees and will be beneficial for the organisation in its long run.
Every organisation has different cultures and these are being followed by each and every individual who are associated with the organisation which reflects the working environment of the organisation.
